AGF Alberta Walks on The Glacier

AGF Alberta continues to move forward in the Western Canada market by securing numerous projects.

One of the most interesting projects we have secured is the Glacier Discovery Walk. Built by PCL Construction, it is located south of Jasper in the Columbia Icefields. This structure will consist of the Discovery Trail, a 400 metre walkway, leading to the Discovery Vista, a glass bottom platform which will extend 30 metres over the edge of a cliff at approximately 100 metres above the ground. This viewing platform will provide visitors with panoramic views of the Columbia Icefields and the Sunwapta Valley.

Two large footings anchored into the side of a mountain will hold the structure in place. Access to the site, uneven rock elevations and the complexity of the anchor bolt design are sure to make this a challenging project. Other difficulties that we will have to deal with are the severe weather conditions in the Canadian Rockies as well as the frequent visits by the wildlife in the area.

The unique design for the Glacier Discovery Walk won the Future Project Category at the 2011 World Architecture Festival Awards. The site is expected to open to the public in summer 2013. AGF Alberta is proud to take part of this one of a kind project.
