Biker with a heart of gold

AGF Steel supports various social and charitable causes through the AGF Group Foundation. Sustaining a foundation takes considerable time and effort. But that doesn’t scare Daniel Lapointe Jr., our maintenance coordinator, and the members of his motorcycle group. Together, in 2010, the six philanthropists created the Dirty Nasty Boys foundation. This is a touching story that deserves to be told.

It all began with the birth of Cynthia Giroux 12 years ago. As a newborn, Cynthia contracted a virus, which left her affected with epileptic encephalopathy. This disease affects babies and creates a neurological weakness that is responsible for motor impairment and overall developmental delays. Today, at age 12, Cynthia is unable to move and is confined to a wheelchair, which means her father, Benoit Giroux, must care for her 24 hours a day.

Four years ago, while doodling on a napkin, Benoît came up with what would become the logo for the Dirty Nasty Boys. The Foundation came into being in November 2010, a combining the twin passions of motorcycling and helping sick children. It was then that Daniel and his buddies decided to change the popular image of bikers.

Dubbed “bikers with a heart of gold” by Photopolice, the DnB are aiming to conquer the world in their efforts to help sick kids who require special care—in particular, Maison André-Gratton, operated by the Lighthouse, Children and Families. This organization is the only pediatric hospice in Quebec, and also provides respite care for parents like Cynthia’s father.

Through several activities that combine their love for motorcycling and helping sick children, the DnB have raised money for various projects, including the purchase of an adapted trailer for a zootherapy project.

This year, AGF Steel took part in a “Shave to Save”: employees in Longueuil raised $885 for Maison André-Gratton by shaving off Daniel’s goatee.

On behalf of AGF Steel, we wish them success in their various projects to improve the lives of sick children.
