AGF Du-For and AGF NL, Partnership for the Muskrat Falls Project

In order to ensure continuous growth and to obtain major projects in Canada, we are proud to announce that AGF Du-For, in partnership with AGF Steel, NL, will manufacture reinforcing steel bars with “T-Bars” steel heads for the construction of the Muskrat Falls dam, located on the lower Churchill River in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Muskrat Falls project includes the construction of a dam and energy plant in Labrador. On the island of Newfoundland, power lines will be put up to transport energy, while an underwater line will be built to join Newfoundland and Cape Breton (Nova Scotia). The Muskrat Falls complex will produce 800 megawatts of hydroelectric power.

Installation of the welding robot

The installation of “T-bars” steel heads replaces the bending process for bars located on outer concrete walls. There are several installation methods for steel heads. However, following our previous experience on a major project and considering the available equipment, we chose to weld the heads to the bars. The welding is a robotized operation. Moreover, in the context of quality control, a bending table was built in order to verify the quality of welding. Construction of the Muskrat Falls dam will require the production of over 40 000 bars with steel heads within the next year.
