AGF Group values: Focus on Leadership Mindset

Steve Dietrich shares his vision of one of AGF's corporate values: Leadership Mindset.

A state of mind more than a job title

The latest research out of Harvard suggests that a leaders’ mindset is fundamental to how leaders think and learn and, as a result, how they act.
At the AGF Group, it is a corporate value that is essential to our success. What we expect from our teams is that when they have the opportunity to take the lead, they should seize it.

  • Being an effective leader requires you to have a leadership mindset, but having a leadership mindset doesn’t require you to have a designated title of leader. Anyone of us can embody the meaning of leadership.

The key to success

In addition to developing motivation and a sense of pride and accomplishment in our work, developing our leadership sometimes paves the way for us to obtain a manager role or can help us grow our career while serving the mission of our company.

Here are some effective tips for developing your leadership skills:

Taking the lead

Growth is the willingness to admit you don’t know everything. That way you’re committed to developing skills and gain knowledge every day.
It is an openness to learning organically through difficult situations and challenges and doing formal professional development. Dare to suggest ways to improve. Take the lead in your career and identify the training that can help you and the company improve and progress.

Own it

An accountable mindset is the ability to face the cannons when things go wrong and take responsibility for a failure. It is the ability to learn the lessons and find solutions rather than looking for a place to shift blame.

Self-awareness

An authentic mindset is the ability to look within ourselves and see our strengths, weaknesses and biases. These are the things that could catch us unaware. Knowing where we have these gaps and seeking out the opinions of others who are more robust in these areas will give us a complete picture to make the right decisions.

Positive mindset

It drives us to see obstacles as challenges and not as problems (which can impede success).Being solution-focused keeps us from falling into a pothole.

Action Focused

We can have all the right attributes, the correct thinking and the positive attitude, but if we do not take action, all other leadership attributes are wasted.

-------

Of course, all this work is useful if we place it in an environment that is supportive to the use of this leadership mindset talent.
A talented leader will stay with your company if he or she has the opportunity - and takes the opportunity - to learn and grow.
