On February 29, the lights went out one last time at the AGF plant in St. John’s (Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador). After two years of continuous work, our teams wrapped up the West White Rose project in Newfoundland.
As a reminder, AGF was involved in the construction of the concrete gravity structure and was in charge of cutting, bending and delivering 16,000 MT of reinforcing steel.
This project was personified by Mario Spadafora and Jean Guy Loubert (respectively AGF NL’s general manager and project manager at the time).
When they talk about it, it’s clear it was one of the most stimulating projects of their professional careers. The collaboration between them is evident: there’s no doubt their good understanding of each other was one of the key factors in the project’s success.
Both Mario and Jean Guy applaud the involvement of the employees, with whom they formed a close-knit team. As soon as they arrived, they hired about 25 people locally, most of whom were new to rebar. They received training and almost all of them stayed on the job for 24 months. Such a low turnover rate is unusual enough in our industry to be worth noting!
They faced many challenges together, but the start-up of production was undeniably one of the biggest: they had to set up the plant, install the machinery, and recruit and train employees, all within a month.
For the second time in less than five years, AGF has decommissioned one of its plants, since its establishment was linked to a single temporary project. This involves repatriating some of the assets and dispatching them to the business units where there is demand for them.
For example:
- the trailers will go to Ontario;
- the bending machines will be shipped to our Quebec plants;
- the tower crane (formerly used in the HEBRON project) has been sent to Calgary;
In terms of human resources, the closure gave many of the St. John’s plant workers an opportunity to easily relocate elsewhere in Canada. Of course, the AGF Group supported them in their efforts to move to another division. Two of the employees joined the Ottawa plant, another went to the Longueuil plant and a quality manager relocated to Calgary.
Beyond the project’s technical success, the AGF Group is proud of the solidarity and team spirit that prevailed in St. John’s. It was a great project in every respect!

El pasado 29 de febrero, las luces se apagaron en la fábrica de AGF en St-John. Después de dos años de trabajo continuo, el proyecto West White Rose en Terranova terminó para nuestros equipos.
Como recordatorio, AGF participó en la realización de la plataforma de gravedad en concreto y estuvo a cargo del corte, plegado y entrega de 16 000 t de acero de refuerzo.
Una historia de hombres antes que todo
Este proyecto fue interpretado por Mario Spadafora y Jean Guy Loubert (en aquella época respectivamente Director General AGF NL y Director de proyecto).
Al escucharlos hablar sobre este proyecto —fue uno de los más estimulantes de su carrera profesional— la complicidad entre los dos es evidente. No cabe duda que su buena relación fue uno de los factores clave para el éxito del proyecto.
Los dos destacan la participación de los empleados, con quienes formaron un equipo unido. Desde su llegada, contrataron aproximadamente 25 personas localmente; la mayoría eran novatos en el acero de refuerzo. Recibieron capacitación y permanecieron casi todos fieles al puesto durante esos 24 meses. ¡Un índice de rotación bajo, lo cual es bastante raro en nuestro sector de actividad!
Juntos superaron varios desafíos, pero el inicio de la producción fue indiscutiblemente uno de sus desafíos más grandes: tuvieron que montar la fábrica, instalar las máquinas, contratar a los empleados y darles capacitación, todo en un mes.
El desmantelamiento de la fábrica
Por la segunda vez en menos de cinco años, AGF desmontó una de sus fábricas. Esto implica específicamente la repatriación de una parte de los activos para enviarlos a las unidades de negocios que lo necesitan.
Por ejemplo:
- La grúa torre (utilizada antes en el proyecto HEBRON) fue enviada a Calgary.
- Los remolques serán enviados a Ontario.
- Y las plegadoras serán enviadas a nuestras fábricas en Quebec.
En cuanto a recursos humanos, para varios trabajadores de la fábrica presentes en St-John, el cierre de la fábrica fue una oportunidad para reubicarse fácilmente en otra parte de Canadá. Grupo AGF naturalmente acompañó a los que lo deseaban para unirse a otra división. Es así que dos empleados se van a unir a la fábrica de Ottawa, otro a la de Longueuil, y un encargado de la calidad empezó a trabajar en Calgary.
Más allá del éxito técnico del proyecto, Grupo AGF se enorgullece de la solidaridad y del trabajo de equipo que dominaba en St-John. ¡Fue un maravilloso proyecto en toda la línea!
