A rocky start
On September 26, 2021, I landed in Vancouver with no idea about the situation at this brand new AGF division in Port Coquitlam.
I found a group of highly capable people who needed support to pull together in the same direction.
There can be many challenges in starting up a new plant. Port Coquitlam was no exception, since we had no electricity or Internet for several weeks, which can be very discouraging.
We also had to be patient and perseverant when it came to sales. Most of our contracts came either through competition or through another division.
A promising future
Since then, with support from Dana Lingwood (Director of Sales and Estimating at AGF Rebar) and the team on site, we’ve gotten operations back on track, and the electricity and the Internet are now connected.
As well, we can now handle 100% of the fabrication for our contracts. Our team, supervised by James Shannon and Dave Palmer, is producing an average of 25 MT per day with only five men and one shift. So far, only half of the equipment has been installed, which is only partially satisfactory. We hope to be able to move forward quickly.
Most of the detailing is done by our colleagues at AGF Tecnik, with guidance from Andrea Holiday and her team. On-site installation is handled by our own team and that of STK.
The team might still be small, but it’s very agile and efficient! James Miller, recently promoted to Acting Superintendent, is heading the team.
Since STK has a larger team, we can work on larger projects.
Lastly, the good news is that a new operations director—John Hallam—is coming on board this month.
After the tough early days, the team is now looking forward with optimism.

Nuevo inicio en Vancouver
Inicios difíciles
El 26 de septiembre de 2021, aterricé en Vancouver sin conocer la situación en esta nueva división de AGF en Port Coquitlam.
Descubrí un grupo de personas muy competentes que necesitaban acompañamiento para trabajar todos hacia la misma dirección.
Los desafíos de puesta en marcha de un nuevo establecimiento pueden ser múltiples. Port Coquitlam no fue la excepción ya que, durante varias semanas no tuvimos ni electricidad, ni Internet. Situación que desanimó a más de uno…
En cuanto a las ventas, también tuvimos que actuar con paciencia y tenacidad. La mayoría de nuestros contratos llegaban por parte de la competencia o gracias a otra división.
Un futuro prometedor
Desde entonces, con el apoyo de Dana Linwood (Directora de ventas y de estimación para AGF Rebar) y del equipo en el lugar, pusimos en marcha las operaciones.
Pudimos conectar la electricidad e Internet.
Igualmente, de ahora en adelante fabricamos nuestros contratos en un 100%. Nuestro equipo, bajo la supervisión de James Shannon y de Dave Palmer, produce en promedio 25 t por día con solamente cinco hombres en un turno de trabajo. Actualmente, solamente se ha instalado la mitad de los equipos previstos, lo que nos proporciona una satisfacción a medias. Esperamos poder hacer evolucionar todo rápidamente.
Nuestros colegas de AGF Tecnik realizan la mayoría del detallado, guiados por Andrea Holiday y su equipo. En cuanto a la instalación del acero en la obra, está garantizada por nuestro equipo y el equipo de la empresa STK.
Hasta el día de hoy, el equipo todavía es reducido, ¡pero se distingue por su agilidad y su eficacia! Lo dirige James Miller, recientemente promovido como superintendente provisional.
STK dispone de un equipo más grande, lo que nos permite tratar de obtener proyectos de mayor tamaño.
Finalmente, una buena noticia: un nuevo director de operaciones, John Hallam, entra en funciones este mes.
Después de los oscuros días del inicio, el equipo ahora ve el futuro con optimismo.
