Have you ever thought about your risk of work-related injuries? Whether you are working in an office, a factory, or on construction sites, are you familiar with the risks involved? What if one of your colleagues were the victim of an accident, can you predict how you would react?
We are all at risk in one way or another:
Recently, a young worker caught his hand in a bender. He had to be hospitalized and lost three fingers as a result of this accident. To this day, his colleagues are still devastated by the event. They keep on asking how this situation could have been prevented, considering no accidents had been reported for a long time.
Please note that it is your right—and your duty—to declare any situation that could put your safety at risk. Become an agent of change!
You can also take action on your work environment by ensuring your work space is well kept, wearing your personal protective equipment, respecting the safety rules, and declaring every incident. It is difficult to say whether one of these actions could have helped prevent this accident, but I believe they could have had a positive influence on the situation.
Do not hesitate to notify your superior if you need training or if you believe your current work situation is dangerous. Act on the situation. Think about the risks before starting your day and make sure to keep an eye on your environment.
Ask for help when needed and intervene if you believe one of your colleagues is exposed to danger. Each of these actions will help prevent other accidents. As I reflect on the situation, I ask myself what we could have done differently to make sure our colleague returned home uninjured.

También puede tomar acción respecto a su ambiente de trabajo asegurándose de mantener bien el lugar, poniéndose su equipo de protección individual (EPI), respetando las normas de seguridad y declarando los acontecimientos. Por el momento es difícil decir si estos elementos hubiesen podido impedir el accidente. Sin embargo, creo que hubiesen tenido una gran influencia positiva sobre la situación.
Si necesita capacitación, infórmenos; si su situación de trabajo es peligrosa, dígaselo a su contramaestre y actúe respecto a la situación. Piense en los riesgos antes de empezar a trabajar y asegúrese de controlarlos.
Pida ayuda si lo necesita, intervenga si un colega se expone a peligro. Todas estas cosas ayudarán a evitar que otros accidentes se produzcan.
Tengo una reflexión para este trabajador accidentado: ¿qué pudimos haber hecho para asegurarnos que regresara a casa en el mismo estado en el que llegó en la mañana, es decir, completamente ileso?
