Special Projects Group

Muskrat Falls Hydroelectric Project

As you might recall, the AGF Group was awarded a contract by Astaldi Canada in late 2013 to supply and install the reinforcing steel required at the Nalcor Energy Muskrat Falls project site in Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada). In November 2014, and as part of this major hydroelectric project, the Special Projects Group was awarded an important contract for the engineering and supply of 12 electrically operated F300 mast-climbing work platforms. The equipment will be used during the installation of the numerous hydroelectric gates and guides at the Muskrat Falls project site. Eighty-five per cent of the project was completed for in the first quarter of 2015, with the remaining order tentatively scheduled to be executed later this year. While this is a first for the hydroelectric sector, the Special Projects Group is currently developing hydroelectric projects elsewhere in Canada.

Helping build bridges in the US

The Special Projects Group was awarded several contracts in late 2014 and early 2015 from construction giants including Walsh Construction, Vinci and Brayman Construction. A total of eight Hydro Mobile mast climbing work platforms and three Winsafe suspended engineered platforms will be used for the construction of the main bridge pylons for the new Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing (between Kentucky and Indiana), the new Ohio River Bridge Downtown Crossing (between Kentucky and Indiana), and the new Ironton Russell Bridge (between Kentucky and Ohio). Compared to other North American access providers, the Special Projects Group employed unique access methods that were considered both technically and commercially advantageous. All three projects will set the stage for upcoming larger bridge projects in Canada and the U.S.

With its solid finish in 2014 followed by a great start to 2015, the Special Projects Group is on the right track.
